Hardwood shutters that screw into the reveal. Craig does the measure and the fit.
A shutter is the heaviest thing Craig fits. Two full-height panels for a 1200mm sash come to about 12kg of hardwood, and they hang on a frame screwed straight into the reveal. Fitted right, it is part of the building. Nobody at a viewing asks about the blinds.
Colour is the easy part. What matters is where the panels split. Full height, one run of louvres top to bottom, does most rooms. Tier-on-tier earns its money on a front room off the pavement, because you can shut the bottom half and still get light over the top. Bedrooms get solid panels. For proper blackout you want a blind behind the shutter. Louvres leak round the edges however well they are made.
63mm louvres suit a small cottage window. 89mm gives you more glass and less slat, which is what most people pick once they see the two side by side. Anything wide, Craig uses hardwood. An MDF-cored panel much over 900mm will bow inside two years, and a bowed panel catches its neighbour every time you close it.
Track shutters do work across sliding doors. Be honest about the stack. Bypass panels park over the glass, so a 2.4m opening can lose 400mm of view when they are open. Sometimes a blind is the better answer and Craig will say so. Reveals in the older Culcheth stock are rarely square. Ten millimetres out corner to corner is normal, so every opening gets templated. Nothing is adjustable once it is cut, which is why the measure takes an hour and not ten minutes.
